Phoenix

"how do you know your
heart is ready," he asked.

and she paused,
contemplating the question.

"it's when you no longer
hold onto the past," she offered.

and just to make sure
she went home and burned all the
dead matter from the last year of her life,

ultimately using the ashes to fertilize the grounds
of her heart for someone new.

thanks, joel!!! this poem came to me on a long hard run and i was grateful to remember it.

the terrain of the heart is a fascinating place. i plan to write a poem about that, too. =)
